Spring Luncheon 2024
April 24, 2024
With a great sense of spring in the air this April, we had our Spring Luncheon of 2024! A good turn-out and a pleasant time to meet again was also met with a delicious meal at Alioto’s, as usual.
Our featured speaker, Professor Jocelyn Szczepaniak-Gillece brought us right back to a college level classroom instruction on the inspirational aspects
of old FILM! We were treated to a great presentation as part of the Film Studies program at the University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee. This is an independent undergraduate program within the College of L&S with close connections to the department of English.
Students in the program study the history and theory of film, television, and digital by researching and analyzing its many dimensions. [Please refer to the Masthead page of the 1st Quarter Luncheon of April 18, 2024 for a greater detail of the aspects of this presentation (some of which was repeated herein.)]
Our presentation at this event was on the history of color film and special effects, focusing on the classic film “The Wizard of Oz” (1939) (with also mention of the other film of 1939: “Gone With the Wind”.) A particular emphasis was on the original uses of color and tone of very early film media. An explanation of how volatile a media that the original films were composed of (nitrate) was of particular interest.
It was great to meet together again and bring ourselves up to date with the latest goings-on of anyone in the group we had opportunity to re-connect with. The following photos were taken at this event. Hope you enjoy, until the next time we meet! Hope you all enjoy a beautiful spring!!
