Needed: Poll Workers for November

Here’s a civic service opportunity for members of the WSJ society. The City of Milwaukee has a need for additional Election Inspectors (aka “Poll Workers”) this November.

A recent change to state law allows qualified citizens to serve at any polling place within their county of residence. Previously, only residents of a particular municipality could serve at its polling places.

Formal training is provided, and there is a small salary paid for both the training and Election Day. Both full and half day Election Day shifts are available.

Working under direction of the polling place’s Chief Inspector, duties include: greeting voters, verifying voters’ registration, issuing ballots, registering new/moved voters, site set-up/closing, etc.

There is a particular need for English / Spanish bilingual inspectors.

The Milwaukee Election Commission also maintains a list of citizens who are bilingual in other languages such as Russian and Hmong. These volunteers are not posted at polling places, but are on-call to offer assistance if needed.
